First Wind has launched its 2012 scholarship search for eligible students attending high school in Waialua, Sunset Beach, Haleiwa, Wahiawa, Laie and Kahuku. The one-time grants are for $3,000, with possible renewal awards of $5,000.

The U.S.-based wind energy company seeks students enrolling in full-time degree programs in science, technology or engineering. For details and an application, go to firstwind.com/scholars. Deadline is Feb. 15.

Now in its third year, the program is designed to encourage technology careers of youths in areas where First Wind has projects operating or in development. The company has turbines in Kahuku and on Maui, and plans further development at Kawailoa on Oahu’s North Shore.
