Now in its final year of a three-year federal grant, Education-1st intends to make an impact this summer on Hawaii’s student athletes with two powerful programs at BYU-Hawaii.

Registration is under way now - and due April 30 - for the agency’s new offering, Game Plan Football Camp.Hosted by UH football coach June Jones, the camp is July 5-8 and has room for 200 male athletes interested in playing college football.Fee is $225 with a $125 deposit due by April 30.

Game plan program director Eli Kapu is assembling a staff of D1, D2 and D3 and junior college coaches to teach academic and college prep skills as well as football skills at the new camp. “We hope to provide a valuable service for our student athletes by focusing on football and inviting college coaches to help our students reach their college goals,” Kapu said.

Game Plan Academy is set for June 26-30 at BYU-Hawaii, intending to keep athletes on track for a college degree.“Too many athletes sign a college letter of intent that they cannot use because they are not prepared academically,” explained Asai Gilman, executive director of Education-1st Hawaii. “And parents often believe that if their sons play Pop Warner, Little League and high school ball, they’re set for a college scholarship. They forget the academic preparation and future goals.”

Gilman said that through the academy he is drawing a response for parents, and they are asking “How can I help my kids?” This is how, he tells them: Sign up for the third annual Game Plan Academy, which offers SAT prep, NCAA Clearinghouse information, admissions and scholarship details in addition to speed, strength and agility training by college coaches and student mentors, his staff and an NCAA certified specialist. Fee is $125, and deadline is May 15.

Applications for either camp may be downloaded at www.edu-1st.org or by calling Kapu at 293-7700.
