Central Oahu high school teachers spent two weeks of their summer break learning about the construction industry with a handful of their colleagues.
Pacific Resource Partnership’s “Tools of the Trade: Exploring Careers in Construction” hosted Leilehua’s Curtis Goya, Mililani’s Jeff Cadiz, and Waipahu’s Timothy In.
Goya said he liked finding out what’s out there for his students as well as interacting with fellow teachers: “People think construction is hands on trades. Not only are the craftsmen involved, but professional people with four-year degrees.
“This is for all spectrums of the kids who want to go to trade school and who want to be professional architects and engineers. There’s business, marketing, accounting, service representatives and information technology people. The industry is also promoting safety.”
A building and construction teacher, Goya plans to apply his internship experience to Leilehua’s Construction Academy next year. He has also interned at HECO and Pearl Harbor in prior summers.
The program introduced teachers to the PRP staff who coordinated the exercise as well as to PBR Hawaii, Group 70, Nordic Construction, Ameron Hawaii, Hidano Construction, Coastal Construction and Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii.
