Girl Scouts are teaming up with Hawaiian Electric Company to promote compact fluorescent light bulbs Oct. 14 during National Energy Awareness Month.

Scouts will be touting the Energy Star-qualified bulbs at the Mililani City Mill store from 2 to 4 p.m., as well as at its seven other Oahu City Mill outlets that day.Customers will be asked to sign a pledge to encourage the switch to more efficient lightbulbs and fixtures.

“CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy and last about 10 times longer than a standard incandescent light,” said Derrick Sonoda, HECO’s Energy $olutions for the Home program manager. “On Oahu, CFLs can save up to $14 per year per bulb based on typical household use.”

Girl Scouts in grades 3 to 5 will undergo a day of eco-friendly training to sharpen their bulb-selling skills to the level of their cookie-selling skills. When done, they will be able to answer all kinds of questions from the public about the CFLs, and also hand out coupons and brochures about them.

The event is part of a national campaign,“Change a Light,Change the World.”

According to Hawaii Girl Scouts spokeswoman Tammy Yamanoha, the troops’involvement “is helping girls to discover their personal best and plan for a positive future, connect with others and take action to make the world a better place.”
