Have Your Say About Mililani Sewage

Residents can say what they think about noxious odor and other issues at the Mililani Wastewater Preliminary Treatment Facility during an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Mililani Uka Elementary School.

The city has proposed increasing the size of the flow channels and installing higher capacity grinding equipment. The project is still in the design phase and could cost about $2.8 million. It is expected to begin next summer.

Roy Abe, project manager for HDR/Hawaii Pacific Engineers, acknowledged that some residents complained about sewage plant odor at the August neighborhood board meeting. “Information on existing odors will be helpful,” Abe stated, “since odors generated by the facility following completion of the project are expected to remain the same or decrease only slightly.”

There also will be a visit to the facility at 9 a.m. Saturday to show residents how wastewater is processed at the site.

The plant was built in the 1960s and ‘70s to treat wastewater for discharge into Kipapa Stream. After several reassignments and bypasses, the facility now does preliminary treatment - grinding down solids in the water and removing grit.
