An indigenous cultural celebration, Healing Our Spirit Worldwide, will stage its opening ceremonies and luau Sept. 5 at Kualoa Regional Park, where delegates will arrive by canoe, exchange traditional ceremonial greetings and then eat together.
But before the canoe arrives, Waimea Valley will host a free arts and crafts marketplace and powwow for the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 4. The heart of the program, however, will be workshops and presentations Sept. 6-9 at the Hawaii Convention Center. Participants must register by May 31 in order to attend all events. HOSW focuses on the wisdom of our kupuna and the aloha of the land and the indigenous people of Hawaii. The movement’s theme is to strengthen and heal families and communities.
Healing Our Spirit Worldwide began as one person’s vision to create an international forum on alcohol and drug abuse among indigenous communities. At this its sixth gathering in Hawaii, it also focuses on successes, wise practices and common issues in health, and healing and addictions. Special programs for kupuna and opio (youth) are scheduled throughout the week.
