Mililani Hongwanji is closing its childcare service at the end of July, prompted by declining enrollment, escalating costs and fixed expenses.

The mission’s board of directors said it made the decision “with heavy heart” after serving Mililani’s five elementary schools for 20 years. Its BASS (Before After School, Summer) program cared for up to 120 children at a time. Board members have been telling parents and staff since January so they can make other plans.

“I feel kind of sad that we can’t continue,” said Bob Asato, a church board and BASS committee member. “Parents have been begging us to keep it open, but we cannot put the financial stability of the whole organization in jeopardy.

“These are bad economic times,” he added. “We’re waiting for it to get better.”
