The Kahuku Public and School Library is celebrating its first 40 years (1968-2008); but it’s hardly in a mid-life crisis.
The library is using this time for looking back with pride on its accomplishments and looking forward to finding more and better ways to serve the community.
Better service is being planned as the library rolls out its new bookmobile. With major funding from Turtle Bay Resort and support from community-minded citizens, the bookmobile will reach readers who cannot get to the library itself. Soon the former tour van will find new life as it visits spots up and down the Ko’olauloa coast.
Even in its conceptual stages in the 1960s, Kahuku Library was planned to be a place of innovation for use by both the public and students at Kahuku High and Intermediate School where it is based - a rather novel idea at that time. It also was to house a state-of-the-art media production room for a variety of graphic and audio production support services.
Next Tuesday (Nov. 18) the community gets its opportunity to celebrate this four-decade milestone. Festivities are planned from 3 to 7 p.m., offering food, music, hula and history. Sam Langi will be the emcee from 3 to 5 p.m., and Benny Kai takes over from 5 to 7.
Please join your friends and neighbors at this birthday bash. Come see what your library has to offer and be sure to borrow some books while you are there.
Also, ask for an application to join the Friends of the Library-Kahuku (FOLK).
