There’s something to be said about seeing the world through the eyes of a child, and the Friends of Waialua Library makes it possible.

Entries from their annual art contest with elementary school students are on view at the library through January.

“It’s a neat display,” said Friends president Marjorie Russell. “It emphasizes the importance of reading and it brings people in and acquaints them with our library.”

Children in grades 1-6 from Sunset Beach and Waialua Elementary, and St. Michael’s School submitted a total of 26 two-dimensional pieces that followed the theme, “It’s All @ Your Library.”

Eight local artists judged the work, and the top three in each grade received $25, $20 and $15 Borders’ gift certificates “so they can buy more books,” noted Russell, who created the contest 12 years ago.

“Anybody who submits a picture is a winner,” she added. “They have wonderful imaginations. It’s so fun because the families are so eager, so very very proud, and the children bring in their aunties and uncles and their relatives to see the pictures.”
