In case you haven’t noticed, mangoes are bursting out all over the Islands, and Haleiwa Farmers Market is ready.
It’s Aug. 30 market day will be turned over to the juicy fruit with a Mango Mania Festival going all day long. Plans call for a recipe contest, cooking demonstrations, pruning and grafting tips and safe-picking tips from HECO.
Those entering the recipe contest must complete a form and file a recipe for each entry. (Categories are sweets, main dish and condiment.) All preparations must be done off-site, as there’s no kitchen or refrigeration at the market. The dish must serve a minimum of eight and will be judged on appearance, flavor, use of product, etc. The grand prize is an Escape Club membership from Turtle Bay Resort. Judges are City Councilman Donovan Dela Cruz, SubZero Wolf chef Carol Nardello and food and book editor Wanda Adams. (Public tasting is from 12:15 to 1 p.m.)
Keiki activities include cowboy crafts from paniolo Albert Moniz, how to care and play with turtles, and making crowns for the festival’s king and queen.
Food vendors will have products showcasing the glorious variety of uses for mangoes - bread, butter, smoothies, pizza, shave ice, cheesecake, burgers, crepes and just plain naked man-goes. There’s also live music, and Heidi Bornhorst will sign copies of her book, Growing Native Hawaiian Plants.
For applications and details on the recipe contest, call Pam Boyar at 388-9696.
The market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Sunday at Kamehameha Highway and Leong Bypass Road near Haleiwa Beach Park.
