Mililani’s Dawn Groves recently had exciting news from Hawaiian Telcom: Her digitally enhanced photo montage won its contest for a spot on the cover of the company’s 2006-2007 yellow pages.

Her work, titled Passion for Knowledge, was modeled on the theme “Celebrating 100 Years of Higher Education in Hawaii - A Century Through an Artist’s Eyes.” The phone book will serve as part of University of Hawaii’s centennial celebration. Groves’ winning piece was the final project for her art class at Leeward Community College, and it earned her an A.

The contest was open to all students, faculty and staff in the UH system during spring semester.

“Originally they were offering $300 to whomever won a place on each of the six directory covers,” said Groves.“When they contacted me, they told me that not only had my art piece won,but they really loved it and wanted to use it on all of the covers.”

She attended the formal unveiling of the new Oahu yellow pages and companion directory during half-time at a Sept. 14 UH Wahine volleyball game.

Groves’ work was “so phenomenal,” said Ron Montgomery, vice president and general manager of Hawaiian Telcom, that it was chosen to grace the covers of all six Oahu directories. The company quickly discovered that Groves is also a photographer.

“They are using some of my photography on their brand new companion book that’s being issued this year,“she said, describing her photo of a canoe that will go on the cover of the condensed volume.“Then they asked me if I had been to the other islands, because they wanted to use my photos for covers for phone books for the respective islands as well.”

In fact, Hawaiian Telcom flew Groves over to the Big Island Sept. 16-17 to photograph the lava.

Groves worked as a critical-care nurse for 20 years, and after an onthe-job back injury, she was forced to temporarily retire from such physically demanding work. In the interim, she decided to pursue her lifelong passion for photography, and is now attending her third semester at LCC toward a degree in digital media with a focus on Internet production.

She also owns her own photography and website design business. Her work is on view at http://www.naturaphotographics.com
