Mililani Author At Celebrate Reading Festival

Chris McKinney, the celebrated author of Tattoo, Queen of Tears and Bolohead, will speak to struggling young readers during a “Celebrate Reading Festival” Sept. 14 at Paliku Theatre in Kaneohe.
McKinney, who lives in Mililani with his wife and young daughter, is one of six authors or performing artists who have been invited for their ability to revet and inspire youths. McKinney has taught at Leeward and Honolulu community colleges, and has shared his work with audiences from Waialua Library to Halawa prison.
The reading festival brings together Windward intermediate and high school students, along with those at Olomana Youth Center from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Windward Community College campus. They and their teachers have been preparing for this event by reading selected works of the speakers.
“I’m interested in the public also attending so we can get an intergenerational conversation going,” said Lorna Hershinow, coordinator of the event which is sponsored by Hawaii Writing Project and a grant obtained by Olomana Youth Center. “Several teachers very much enjoyed working with Chris McKinney this past June at a literature institute which he co-directed with me and Farrington’s Liz Shiraki.”
Other participants are poet Kealoha (emcee), Keola Beamer, Jon Osorio, Sage Uilani Takehiro and Matt Kaopio.
