Mililani’s seven public schools earned a 2010 Ola Pono Award for “making a meaningful, substantial contribution to the community” through their character education efforts.
The Mililani Schools Complex Character Counts Team accepted $1,000 (to be donated to Mililani Library) during the spring awards ceremony in Waikiki for promoting safe, healthy and drug-free lifestyles.
“This is recognition for the many, many faculty members at each of the Mililani schools who teach, promote, and develop the Six Pillars of Character within our students,” said Central District resource teacher Gregg Iha. “The nine of us who attended the banquet were merely there as representatives for the many faculty members who share the credit for this effort.”
All seven complex schools have instilled character education since receiving the Joint Ventures Education Forum Grant in 2005, which pays for training in the core values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
“Each of the Mililani schools is working to make the Six Pillars of Character an integral part of the culture of the school - part of everyday life,” added Iha.
Each February, for example, the schools and their partners have a Wellness Fair at Mililani Town Center, now called “Character Counts Fair.”
Added this year was a training class for coaches, athletic directors and administrators on a theme of “victory with honor.”
“There is now consistency in the character education efforts across all of the Mililani schools,” added Iha.“It makes it easier for us to solicit parent and community support for this effort since all seven of them are on the same page.”
Character banners are up at Mililani Library, the district park gym and at some MTA events. “We want to see and feel those core ethical values in everything we do, every time, everywhere,” Iha said.
The Ola Pono Awards are given in partnership with Aloha United Way,the Dept. of the Attorney General, the DOE, Safe & Drug Free Schools and Communities and the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii.
