As youth ambassadors, two Mililani High School students have the ear of the mayor when it comes to their future quality of life on this island.
Raenaa Fukushima and Kent Yamada met with Mayor Mufi Hannemann Dec. 2 at Honolulu Hale to discuss new strategies to spread the word about energy and sustainability, along with 27 other Oahu teens selected as Hannemann’s 21st Century Ahupuaa Youth Ambassadors.
“It is clear to me from my public appearances and discussions with Oahu’s youths that they understand the need to actively work to ensure that our environment is maintained and improved,“said Hannemann. “They do not feel inconvenienced by the extra effort to recycle or weigh the environmental consequences of their actions.”
He especially recruited Fukushima and Yamada because they live in a community that is conducting a pilot curbside recycling program.
“(The ambassadors) were nominated by their schools because of their commitment to the environment and their leadership potential,” the mayor noted.
