Kipapa Elementary School collected multiple honors last month for its entries in the ‘Olelo Youth XChange Video Competition. The other Central Oahu finalist was Mililani Uka.
The Kipapa students earned three first-place awards for Fill’er Up With Gas Saving Tips (news), Kids Against Cancer (mini-documentary) and Marine Debris (environmental justice) in the elementary division. The Mililani Uka students’ effort, Obesity, was a category finalist for mini-documentary.
(Kipapa’s Marine Debri video also was shown March 24 in Waikiki during the Great Hawaiian Folkife Festival and Sunset on the Beach.)
Winning schools receive Sony video cameras, and the top competition winners will receive high-definition Sony cameras.
“It’s inspiring to see how students use video to express themselves, ” said ‘Olelo CEO Kealii Lopez.“The Xchange reaffirms the value of providing our youths with a dynamic forum to articulate their views on issues they face.”
More than 300 entries were accepted from across the state into the fourth annual competition. The awards were presented May 9 at Ihilani Resort’s Ocean Ballroom.
‘Olelo also aired the winners on Channel 56.
