The 4-H Cooperative Extension Services at UHManoa has seen a need and filled it with a family camp later this month for military families on the North Shore.

Operation: Military Kids runs from Nov. 20 to 22 at YMCA Camp Erdman for all branches of the armed services and their family members who are affected by a deployment. The camp aims to help families come together, enjoy themselves and better understand one another before or after deployments.

“We just want to give these families a chance to reconnect,” said Claire Nakatsuka, UH extension educator and program coordinator.

To that end, they have planned archery, swimming, crafts, kayaking, hiking, a ropes course, climbing wall, campfires, keiki-only groups, Operation Military Kids speak-out sessions and other special events.

The initiative launched in April 2005 and is a collaboration between the U.S.Army and its neighbors in the local community. For more information, call Nakatsuka at 956-7196 or e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
