For the 17th year, Navy staff and families spread their aloha to North Shore residents with Operation Aloha at the Waialua Community Center.

The Thanksgiving Day feast was attended by more than 400 guests, many of them with no other place to go on America’s feast day. The bountiful lunch was coordinated and served by more than 50 Sailors, civilians and relatives from NCTAMS Pac (Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station, Pacific).

“I’ve been attending Operation Aloha since 2000,” said Mike Holland. “I really appreciate that the military comes out here and does this for us. I can’t wait for next year!”

Making it happen - along with some 800 volunteer hours from NCTAMS - were Turtle Bay Resort, which cooked the turkeys, rice and potatoes; Molly’s Smokehouse in Wahiawa, which cooked everything else; and donated staples from Wal-Mart, Costco, Anna Miller’s, and Ted’s, Napoleon and Love’s bakeries, and many more local merchants.

Transforming Waialua Community Center into a festive hall were children from St. Michael’s School, Wahiawa Girl Scouts and Dole (pineapple centerpieces). Entertaining were Aunty Kanani’s Girls (hula), the Inside-Out band, dancer Stephanie Van Lear, singer Chenise Blalock and guitarist Warrant Officer Michael Norris.

“I would definitely do it again,” said Warrant Officer Jerald Larkey, who directed the project.“The satisfaction I received from seeing people smile during this important time of the year is priceless.”
