Hui O He’e Nalu kicks off its annual North Shore beach cleanup at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Velzyland Park, then moves on to remove litter from Haleiwa and Malaekahana as well, covering more than 10 miles of roads, bike ways, surf spots and parks.
Several pro surfers will join the effort, and the first 200 volunteers to bring one nonperishable food item for Hawaii Foodbank will receive a free Da Hui sticker.
A post-cleanup Winter Surf Makahiki for participants will feature food, drinks and music from A’a Mele, Konfrontation, Natural Vibrations and others. (No drugs or alcohol will be permitted on the Velzyland park grounds or parking area, enforced by police officers and deputy sheriffs.)
The city and Quiksilver will provide gloves and trash bags, along with support from several surf brand sponsors.
A pre-cleanup meeting starts at 8 a.m. at Velzyland Park.
