Hurricane season is here, and so are concerns about where to turn for help.
Liliuokalani Protestant Church has joined a number of facilities approved by American Red Cross as North Shore emergency shelters, though the type and severity of a given disaster will determine its use at the time.
Waialua Community Association and ARC also have agreed to store emergency supplies at WCA’s cottage.
“We’ve also had Red Cross volunteers looking at several facilities in terms of structure and occupancy size in the area to see if we can possibly add more shelters to the list in that community,” said Jennifer Walter, ARC-Hawaii disaster services response and preparedness manager. “But residents should just be aware that not every shelter is sanctioned for all disasters - some are for brush fires, others for high surf, a few for hurricanes and others for flooding. Always turn to local media outlets to find out which shelters will be open.”
Other more familiar shelters in the area are Waialua Elementary and Waialua High & Intermediate schools.
