OHA Grant To Aid Haleiwa Clinic

Del.icio.usAn infusion of $50,000 in April from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs will help Waikiki Health Center focus on the health needs of native Hawaiians and kupuna on the North Shore.
The grant will bolster its signature program Ho’ola Like (healers together), located in its North Shore Primary Care Clinic at Queen Liliuokalani Church. The Haleiwa clinic integrates holistic Hawaiian healing with Western medical care. It’s open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Walk-ins are welcome. “We expect that kupuna - residents 45 and older whose experience end wisdom enable them to provide guidance to their family - will influence their children and grandchildren to seek the help of the center and ultimately improve the health of their families and the community,” said Darlene Hein, WHC director of community services director.
The OHA grant also will fund the monthly delivery of medical services to seniors in low-income housing and bolster its Care-A-Van mobile clinic outreach to homeless people in the area.
The Care-A-Van program has two medically equipped vehicles that have a private exam room where staff can conduct breast cancer screening, reproductive health checkups, children’s health care and other services. The vans make scheduled visits to about 30 locations islandwide each week. A $25,000 grant from the Harold
K.L. Castle Foundation in March will expand the program’s Windward outreach to the Family Promise homeless clients in Kailua and to Puu Honua Initial Contact Shelter in Hauula run by Brother Sage.
“It’s important for island families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to know that Waikiki Health Center is here for them, wherever they live and regardless of their ability to pay,” said WHC director Sheila Beckham.
