Potential Prizes, Published Poems Await

Del.icio.usThe Jan. 27 deadline is looming for Central Oahu students in grades 3 to 12 to enter the 12th annual Star Poets Contest.
The program is designed to encourage Hawaii’s public and private school students to “find their own voice through writing,” explained contest coordinator Susan St. John.
“It helps develop critical thinking skills and attention to language in a fun and motivating way.”
Beyond that, cash and fame are involved.
Mililani High School student Courtney Wilson, for example, won in the grade 10 category last year. The top five poems in each grade level win $50, and additional cash prizes will go to the entries that deliver on the theme of “What brings people and communities together?”
Winning poems also will be published in the Star Poets Journal and be heard at a public reading and awards ceremony later this spring.
“Our goal is to help teachers, parents and students discover the joy and challenge of wordplay through poetry,” St. John added.
A maximum of three poems that do not exceed 20 lines each are welcome by mail to St. John at Windward Community College, 45-720 Keaahala Road, Kaneohe HI 96744.

Support for the contest comes from the Hawaii Council for the Humanities, the Hawaii Writing Project, Atherton Family Foundation, Windward Arts Council, Kaiser Permanente and Windward Community College.
