Asagi Fresh Foods LLC will make its case at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 20 for a small poultry processing facility at Hawaii Agricultural Research Center at Kunia.

The public hearing on the major conditional use permit is in the 8th floor conference room of the Fasi Municipal Building on King Street.

The family-run company, which also has an egg hatch-ery, wants to provide fresh poultry to Hawaii and plans to install a shipping-like container for a slaughterhouse on the former Del Monte plant grounds on Kunia Road. According to Steve Tagawa of the city Planning and Permitting Department, Asagi would transport 100 to 300 chickens by truck to the container “one to three days a week” for processing between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“It would be a small, 40-foot container with no exterior pens,” he said, “not like those big ones they had at Campbell Industrial Park.”

Maxie Asagi estimates to have up to eight workers. The Wahiawa-Whitmore Neighborhood Board endorsed the project in June after satisfying its concerns.

The land is zoned AG-1 (restricted ag) and is the site for several new farming enterprises. A hearing on Paina Hawaii LLC’s produce irradiation facility plan for Kunia is set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 12 in the City Council committee room at Honolulu Hale.

For more information on either project, call Tagawa at 768-8024.
