Readers Meet With Authors At UH Festival

Del.icio.usThe annual Celebrate Reading Festival on the UH-Manoa campus attracted avid bookworms from all over the island, including a contingent from Wahiawa.
It has become a tradition for students to be part of the youth literature gathering. Also celebrated on the Neighbor Islands, the April 28 festival provides a list of books for people of all ages to read prior to the event, which includes meeting and talking with the authors.
Todd Miyashiro, who teaches freshman English at Leilehua High School, volunteered with Celebrate Reading while earning his teaching credential. This time he took one of his students.
“I got a late start so I didn’t get as many students as I wanted to bring,” he said. “When I volunteered for three years, the kids that did go enjoyed themselves. Meeting the authors gives them extra excitement.”
The festival’s founder, Lorna Hershinow, said the program is for all book lovers everywhere. “It is an opportunity for students to meet authors and be in an intergenerational conversation.
The program kicked off on April 26 with a reading and question-and-answer session with author Haruki Murakami.
