The Central Oahu community is taking steps to honor the memory of three of its outstanding residents by naming popular landmarks after them, all with the help of resolutions passed by the Honolulu City Council.
At a recent neighborhood board meeting, the MililaniWaipio-Melemanu board voted to rename Mililani Town Center Neighborhood Park the Michael S. Nakamura Neighborhood Park. It also agreed unanimously to rename the entrance roadway to Waipahu Cultural Garden Park after C.O. “Andy” Anderson.
Other neighborhood boards are in the process of endorsing the resolutions.
The City Council has also voted to rename the Central Oahu Sports Complex after the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink, who had served on the council at one time from the Waipahu area. She died in 2002.
The state Board of Education has also approved a request to name the Waipahu Library’s young adult reading room after Anderson.
Both men, who died earlier this year, were longtime residents and well-known volunteers in their communities.
Nakamura, from Mililani, had been the chief of police as well as the Central District member of the state BOE.
Anderson, a retired Marine, had spent 30 years volunteering for Waipahu organizations, including serving as chair of its neighborhood board.
