When public school students return to classes Jan. 5, new cafeteria meal prices will be in effect.

The 2009 Hawaii State Legislature amended the law to stipulate that “moneys received from the sale of the meals shall be not less than one-half of the cost” of preparing them. A lower rate or free meals for children from eligible low-income homes will still apply.

The new pricing structure is: 95 cents for breakfast (30 cents for low-income), $1.90 for adults or for second helpings, $2.20 for lunch (40 cents for low income), $1.75 for second student entree, $4.40 for second and subsequent student lunch helpings, $4.40 for adults.

According to the state Department of Education, it is not reimbursed for second helpings, and the $4.40 reflects the real cost to prepare lunch.
