Laura Figueira has been appointed to serve the remaining weeks of state Sen. Robert Bunda’s term, a task that shouldn’t be unfamiliar since she has been on his office staff for 14 years, the last six as chief of staff.

Bunda resigned July 16 to run for lieutenant governor, leaving Figueira to run the office and serve constituents of the 22nd District (Mililani Mauki to Mokuleia).

She is the past president of the Haleiwa Arts Festival and is an active leader with the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Council of Portuguese Heritage, a member of the Sunset Beach Community Association and North Shore Chamber of Commerce. She has a degree in psychology from UH Manoa.

Gov. Lingle selected Figueira from a list submitted by the state Democratic Party and sought public comment before announcing her choice Sept. 7.

“I have known Laura and Ron (Kouchi, Kauai Senate replacement) for many years, and I look forward to working with them,” Lingle said. “I appreciate their willingness to represent their respective districts and serve our state on an interim basis.”
