Mililani residents Candace Chun, Jenna Maligro and Mae Dorado proved that health services/sciences pathways in public schools are alive and well when they each were honored with Hawaii Association for Career and Technical Education awards last month.
Chun, health services instructor at Mililani High, was named Outstanding Secondary CTE Educator by the association, which represents all Hawaii CTE programs.
“I know there are so many hard-working CTE teachers throughout the state, so I am honored to represent all of them,“said Chun, who taught food service for more than 20 years at MHS before switching to health occupations adviser five years ago.
Chun also nominated Maligro for Outstanding Secondary CTE Student. The two-year state president of Health Occupations Students of America has helped educate business and community leaders about the shortage of health-care workers and first responders. The recent MHS graduate also recently won a national HOSA scholarship of $2,000.
“Jenna has inspired and given others the opportunity to be involved with an organization that offers state and leadership conferences and workshops, helps them develop a competitive edge, and assists them in deciding on possible professional health careers,“Chun said of Maligro.
Chun said Maligro helped to nearly double student participation in the HOSA national leadership conference where 19 of Mililani’s 34 delegates won top honors. They will represent their school June 21-27 in Orlando.
Dorado received the Outstanding Post-secondary CTE Educator award for her work as an instructor/adviser at KCC.
