Student Art On View At Convention Center

Del.icio.usOriginal artwork by five Central Oahu schoolchildren is on view for one year before an audience of hundreds of people from all over the world.
The 2006 Student Art Exhibition opened in May at the Hawaii Convention Center, where two-dimensional creations by nearly 100 island children in grades K-6 are on view in the center’s third-floor courtyard.
“Some teachers really went for this,” said Alison Ibara-Kawabe, DOE art education specialist, “and we got lots of calls when we didn’t do it last year.”
Visitors can see the children’s unique interpretations of the “Island Style” theme. Central Oahu selections come from Natalie Halstead, Jack Koehler, Hannah Longnecker and Genevieve Murray of Trinity Lutheran School in Wahiawa, and Eun-ae Mann of Kipapa Elementary School in Mililani. Their teachers are Kathleen Gustine (Trinity) and Leslie Kodani (Kipapa).
About 500 people attended the opening reception, which was emceed by MidWeek cartoonist Roy Chang, a longtime supporter of the student art program.
