Students Walk In Someone Else’s Shoe(boxes)

Students from Mililani High, Mililani Middle and Mililani Uka, Mauka, Ike, Waena and Kipapa elementary schools collaborated on a collection drive recently, bringing a bit of the holiday spirit to others less fortunate in the community.
The seven schools just wrapped up their inaugural year participating in Chinen&Arinaga Financial Group’s annual Shoebox for the Homeless Project.
The concept came about four years ago when CAFG agent John Au began collecting donations for the homeless from schools in Windward Oahu where he lives. The company would award prize money to the three schools that collected the most shoe boxes based on the percentage of students enrolled.
This year, the company expanded the project to other school complexes, starting with their home base in Mililani. They pitched the idea to Mililani complex principals during a meeting at the beginning of the school year, and all agreed to step to the challenge.
“They just wanted it to be a friendly competition among all the schools, but we actually said we’ll all just participate but we’ll split the (prize money),” said Jenna Timas, service projects chairwoman on MHS’s student council.

Honolulu Community Action Program collected the shoeboxes last month,and project coordinator Laraine Yasui is pleased to announce that the students did very well on their first go-round.
“We collected a total of 1432 shoe boxes,“she reported, adding that HCAP will distribute the contents to homeless families in Hawaii. “We plan to do it annually and hope that participation increases each year as the families get to know and expect this project.”
“They were surprised that the high school collected a lot of boxes,“added Timas,a junior. “We have over 50 boxes. We had things like a Manuheali’i dress,Nike shoes, a lot of school supplies, women’s personal hygiene products, old stuffed animals ...There weren’t a lot of boxes, but the items were very good. I was very surprised with what people turned in.
“These people are gonna get good things coming from these boxes, plus all the things from the elementary and middle school, too.”
Certificates of accomplishment will be presented to all seven principals Dec. 30, along with a $1,000 donation to be split among the schools.
