Surfrider Awards Make Waves In Waimea

Del.icio.usThe Surfrider Foundation hosts its seventh annual John Kelly Environmental Awards benefit dinner/silent auction at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Waimea Valley Pavilion, and the public is invited.
“We’re stoked to have this event at Waimea Valley because we were part of the coalition that helped save the valley a few years ago,“said Stuart Coleman, SFH regional coordinator.
The event is named for the late local surfer and activist and pays homage to ocean lovers and environmental leaders who have followed Kelly’s footsteps in the sand. Guests include past winners and surf giants Peter Cole, Randy Rarick and others, who will dine on a buffet of local favorites and enjoy music from Micah Wolf, Johnny Helm and the Throwdowns, plus a screening of 180 Degrees South.
Artist Bill Braden will receive the Environmentally Friendly Local Company Award for his work in preserving the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands through his paintings and activism. Braden worked side-by-side with Jack Johnson and the Kokua Foundation to convince Kobayashi Corp. not to develop the Pupukea-Paumalu area above Sunset Beach.
“That’s just pristine land, and it’s the only place on the island that we can still call country,” Coleman said. “Bill flew over with Jack and gave them a painting of the area without any development. Just that personal connection convinced them not to develop it.”
The Professional Surfer award will go to brothers Keith, Chris and Dan Malloy for their work as watermen, film-makers and environmentalists, and the Lifetime Achievement award goes to Yvon Chouinard for founding Patagonia Inc.
“What we really like about him (Chouinard),“Coleman said,“is that he’s supported Surfrider over the years, but he was the founder of the One Percent for the Planet organization, which is really amazing.“The group aligns itself with businesses that contribute at least 1 percent of their net annual sales to environmental organizations.
The party is part of a first-ever Hawaii Chapters Conference at Camp Erdman in Mokuleia, a weekend of workshops focused on water quality, beach access, plastic products and beach debris (plastic and cigarette butts).
