Despite increasingly higher costs, the DOE will continue its free and reduced-price meal service for eligible students this year under the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs.
Applications are being sent to all homes inviting families to apply for the discounted meals, and all schools have additional forms available. Details on family size, income, etc. are confidential and help determine eligibility. Facts may be verified at any time during the school year, which begins for most students on Aug. 3. In certain cases, foster children also may benefit.
Regular student price for meals in 2009-2010 is $1.25 and 35 cents for breakfast, but a BOE-approved increase goes into effect in January
“We do expect to see more households submitting those applications,” said DOE food services branch supervisor Janice Low.
