Waiawa Draft EIS Up For Review

If all goes according to plan, Waiawa will have a new residential complex four years from now on a 191-acre parcel planned by Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii for a variety of income ranges.
Located on Ka Uka Boulevard mauka of H-2 Freeway on lands formerly in pineapple cultivation, the project plans 1,500 single-family homes and multi-family units, including affordable housing.
Neighborhood commercial and community centers, an elementary school and parks also are planned.
Public comment on the draft environmental impact statement must be in by Dec. 24, 2007. Copies are at public libraries and on the state Land Use Commission web-site at www.luc.state.hi.us Send comments to the LUC c/o Anthony Ching P.O. Box 2359, Honolulu, Hawaii 96804.
As a “planned project” in the Central Oahu Sustainable Communities Plan, Castle & Cooke hopes to gain the go-ahead and approval by the fall of 2009 and have the initial homes ready for residents in 2011.
Some nearby residents, however, are concerned about how the project will affect area traffic and nearby schools. The developer is expected to address these concerns with neighborhood boards in the near future.
According to Ching, public testimony “can raise issues, agree or raise controversy with respect to their findings” relating to the acceptability or the conformity of the plan. “But it’s not the time to comment on the merits of the proposed project.”
