Waimea Invites Public To Its Rededication

Waimea Valley presents Pulama ‘O Waimea from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Aug. 14 to highlight the rededication of the sacred valley into the hands of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and its partners, who acquired the land in August of 2006.

“On this particular weekend we look forward to expressing a special mahalo to everyone who participated in the effort to ensure that this cultural and natural treasure would be preserved in perpetuity,” said Waimea executive director Gail Ann Chew.

The event offers Hawaiian arts and crafts and keiki games. Native artisans will demonstrate ukulele making, feather weaving and weapon-ry,and guests can tour the gardens or take a family hike to the top of Kalahe’e Ridge.

As a finale at 7 p.m., the park will premiere the film Mighty Uke, commemorating the history and global expansion of the popular island instrument.

Cost is $10 per person and $8 for keiki age 12 and under. General admission is $8 at the park gift shop until Aug. 13. For details, call 638-7766.
