Former Honolulu resident Laurie Long returns to the Islands this month to share some timely advice on being prepared for any disaster that comes your way, be it personal, weather- or war-related.
Long is the guest speaker in the Waterhouse Lecture Series, which opens Oct. 20 at Cornerstone Fellowship Christian Church in Mililani. Her talk and workshop runs from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church, located at 95-1080 Ukuwai St.
As an author of two books on the subject, Long will discuss “Be Prepared, Get Organized and Stop Procrastinating.” Questions for guests to consider: Could you leave in 3 minutes with everything you need to rebuild your life? Could you quickly locate all of your personal, legal and financial documents? Do you have a “get away” bag packed for every member of the family - including the kids and dog? Do you have a backup of your computer documents?
Based on her own life experience - for example, losing 12 family members and close friends within a five-year period - Long has published The Next 48 Hours (about losing a loved one and the funeral industry) and My Life in a Box ... A Life Organizer (getting control over life’s important paperwork). She also offers tips on how to archive photos and how to write your personal story as a legacy for your children and grandchildren.
For more information on the Mililani program, call Vicky Kawamae at 626-7719. Other talks are set for Oct. 21 at Kailua Community Church, Oct. 24 at Moanalua Gardens Missionary Church, and Oct. 28 at Waialae Baptist Church. (For details, call 732-5561, ext. 204.)
