Most North Shore folks know about Susan Luehrs’ nonprofit agency that matches service dogs with people who have disabilities. But it’s not as well-known that it costs about $18,000 to breed, raise and successfully train a Hawaii FI-DO dog. The bills keep coming in. So the group held its very first major fundraiser Dec. 1 at Cinnamon’s Family Restaurant in Kailua. Guests who paid $50 were treated to delicious pupus, a carving station, wine tasting, dessert, caroling, a silent auction and demonstrations by the dogs. Founded in 1999, the group also helps high-risk youths and state hospital patients who help train the canines. The dogs are Labradoodles and other Lab mixes, golden retrievers, boxers and King Charles Spaniels.
