Liliuokalani Church 175th Birthday

As Oahu’s second oldest Hawaiian church, Liliuokalani Protestant Church in Waialua takes every anniversary seriously. For its 175th birthday on Aug. 4, the church invited the Rev. David Kaupu to read from scripture, followed by entertainment and a big luau feast — take out or eat in — all on the theme “Onipaa Mau I Ka Hana o Ke Akua (Remain steadfast in the work of the Lord).” The first worship service was held in 1832 in a thatched house, the first of four worship centers on the site. Queen Liliuokalani worshiped there and also donated a glass chandelier, hymnals and the famous seven-dial clock still in the sanctuary. Besides the luau hospitality, guests enjoyed the historic portraits, cemetery, weather vane and church yard.
