For almost half of his lifetime, Dylan Cuesta has been wrestling at a local and national level, capturing his share of medals, titles and trophies - some that tower over him.
This year the 7-year-old Mililani Ike Elementary student won three Outstanding Wrestler awards for his age group at the Cliff Keen Kickoff Classic, Tulsa Nationals and Eastern World Championships; the Trinity Award - The Ultimate Triple Crown; and Wrestler of the Year from World of Wrestling/Wrestling USA/Cliff Keen Athletics - plus countless other tournament accolades.
On Nov. 20 and 21 Dylan will return to Tulsa to be recognized as a member of the 2009 All Star Team, Division Wrestler of the Year and possibly overall Wrestler of the Year (for ages 6-15).
To train for the tournaments, Dylan practices twice a week with the Armed Forces Jr. Grappling Wrestling Club, comprised of 15-20 children ranging in age from 5 to 15 years old.
“Dylan started wrestling at age 4,“said his father,Shannon, “and it was very rough because he was always the smallest and had to wrestle bigger kids during practices and competitions. He needed encouragement to just do his best because of his size disadvantage, as wrestling is a rough and aggressive individual sport.”
Dylan lives in Mililani with his mom Frances, dad Shannon and 5-year-old brother Bricen.
“Bricen is Dylan’s other wrestling partner,” added Shannon. “He wrestled in the PAL season in 2007. He hopes to follow in his brother’s footsteps.”
The tiny Mililani wrestler also enjoys soccer, basketball, boxing, swimming, fishing, drawing, building Legos and riding his bike and four-wheeler.
