Mililani resident Joe Hunkler was recognized Oct. 9 as the 2010 Oahu Red Cross Volunteer of the Year during its Heroes Breakfast. A retired engineer, Joe reports daily to Red Cross headquarters on Diamond Head Road. He helped deploy 41 volunteers to the Gulf Coast during the 2008 hurricane season, prepared 20 Hawaii volunteers to go to American Samoa after the tsunami struck, and has created a mentor program for retaining new volunteers ... The Billboard Touring Awards Humanitarian for 2010 is North Shore singer/environmentalist Jack Johnson and his wife Kim, who have devoted the past seven years to “effecting change in their home state of Hawaii and worldwide through involvement in many social and environmental issues.” Besides all the projects of Kokua Hawaii Foundation here, Jack’s lucrative music tours incorporate green practices, and he gives 100 percent of tour profits (via the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation and its All At Once campaign) to local and national groups who can make the world a better place. The couple will accept the honors Nov. 4 in New York City ...
