Consolidation Is Hot Topic In East

Del.icio.usThe state Department of Education conducts important hearings this week on whether to consolidate schools in both the Kalani and Kaiser complexes.
The Kalani Complex hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 in the Kalani High School cafeteria; and the Kaiser hearing is at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15 in the Kaiser High cafeteria.
The DOE welcomes comments from the public on studies it has made of attendance and other factors favoring the closure of one or more elementary schools for financial reasons. The studies are available at doe.k12.hi.us, and testimony may also be mailed to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) up to three business days after the hearing dates.
In the Kalani Complex, Liliuokalani Elementary School is being considered for closure, with its 99 students being sent to Waialae and/or Liholiho Elementary. (Wailupe was closed last year with Aina Haina picking up its students.) The school marks its centennial in 2012, and the Friends of Queen Liliuokalani School are circulating a petition to save the school.
Kaiser Complex is considering “whether and when"to close either Koko Head (269 students) or Kamiloiki (362), with the students being shifted to Hahaione (472) and/or whichever school remains open. (Figures listed are from the DOE’s official 2010-2011 enrollment data.)
Those testifying this week should provide a written copy at the hearings.The DOE will then submit its recommendations to the state Board of Education.
Information meetings were held in November to prepare the public for the hearings.
