Lunalilo Home hopes its Jan. 31 luau will help heal an ailing budget and bring neighbors together to have fun and keep its kupuna services running smoothly.
The annual benefit is from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with music by Melveen Leed, Holunape and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Band with Kuuipo Kumukahi. It also commemorates the 174th birthday of the home’s namesake, King William Charles Lunalilo.
On the menu are kalua pig, laulau, squid luau, lomi salmon, poke, raw crab, chicken long rice, poi, haupia, sweet potato, pineapple, juice and water. Take-out service is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 and should be purchased by Jan. 16 by calling 395-1000. Guests also get a custom-designed T-shirt.
Proceeds go toward programs, furnishings and equipment at the Hawaii Kai facility, which has experienced a decline in trust fund support because of the economy.
“Everything is getting more expensive, and the residents don’t pay enough to offset expenses,” explained Grace Mee, the home’s finance manager who recently took on the additional role of executive director. “We need to be self-sufficient,” she added, noting that grants have also dried up. Donations, volunteers and more paying residents of all ethnic backgrounds are welcome.
Both the home and its adult day care program have openings.
“Lunalilo Home has a very caring staff, and the whole environment is just like family, not an institution,” said Mee, a Hawaii Kai resident who has worked there for 18 years. The home is located at 501 Kekauluohi St.
