Palolo Links Boost Award To Chaminade

Chaminade University is one of only three colleges nationwide to earn the 2007 Presidential Award for Service to Youth from Disadvantaged Circumstances.

The Catholic college in Kaimuki is now on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which reflects its commitment to service learning and civic engagement.

President Sue Wesselkamper proudly pointed to the 62,000 hours of service performed by its students, faculty and staff - and 85 percent of those participating students helped disadvantaged youths.“We consider service to be a key component in educating our students and preparing them to become engage citizens,” she said.

Another feature is its Palolo Pipeline & Beyond project, which gives academic support to kids in the public housing, and tax filing help to local working-poor families. Students trained by the IRS for this obtained tax credits and more than $150,000 in refunds for the families.

Corporation for National and Community Service made the awards last month at a national conference in San Diego. The CNCS also administers Senior Corps,AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Other winners with Chaminade were Syracuse University and the University of Redlands.
