Below are highlights of what’s happening in the East Oahu community in the next few weeks.

* BOARDS Area neighborhood boards meet at 7 p.m. on the following dates: Kaimuki, April 18 at Liliuokalani Elementary School; Waialae-Kahala, April 19 at Wesley United Methodist Church; Hawaii Kai, April 24 at Hahaione Elementary School; KuliououKalani Iki, May 3 at Aina Haina Library; Palolo Neighborhood Board, May 9 in the Palolo Elementary School cafeteria; and Diamond Head-Kapahulu-St. Louis Heights board, May 10 at the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse. * HIGHRISE The city Planning Commission conducts a public hearing at 1:30 p.m. April 18 on 21st Century Homes’ request to change zoning on Hawaii Kai Drive to allow an apartment building to be 90 feet high. The hearing is in the City Hall Annex on South King Street. Call 523-4430.

* NEWCOMERS The Honolulu Newcomers Club holds its monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. April 19. Call 396-2628.

* EARTH DAY Chaminade University’s Gender and Environmental studies programs co-sponsor a free talk on “Global Warming and Buddhism"at 7 p.m. April 19 in the Ching Conference Center, second floor of Eiben Hall. Call 735-4822.

* WHALE TALK Hanauma Bay Education Center presents a free lecture at 6:30 p.m. April 19 on humpback whales and underwater sounds, with Alison Stimpert. The April 26 topic is spinner dolphin genetics. Call 397-5840.

* BAY CLEANUP Volunteers meet at 8:30 a.m. April 21 at the Hanauma Bay Visitors Center in order to clean the park and surrounding areas. Call 395-1217.

* FOOD DRIVE Koko Marina is an area host for the annual Hawaii Foodbank’s statewide drive with activities and promotions planned from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 21 at the center, including a can sculpture contest starting at 10 a.m. and a concert by Imua at 1 p.m. Call 395-4737.

* LUAU The Kaiser High School Alumni Association throws a luau for all alumni, friends and Cougar supporters from 5:30 to 10 p.m. April 21 in the Kaiser cafeteria. Tickets are $40. Call 394-2432.


* OPERETTA Chaminade University presents the comic operetta The Pirates of Penzance through April 22 in Mamiya Theater. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. April 20 and 21, and 4 p.m. April 22. Tickets are $12 and $7. Call 735-4725.

* BENEFIT SALE The Movement Center holds a benefit garage sale from 8 a.m. to noon April 21 in the Koko Head Elementary School cafeteria. Call 735-8641

* ECKANKAR The Honolulu Eckankar Center presents the free program,“Past Lives, Dreams and Soul Travel,” at 3 p.m. April 22 at 1056 12th Ave., Room 201. Call 735-7719.

* PARENTING The Waterhouse Lecture Series presents a free talk by psychologist Kevin Leman on “Value Packed Parenting: Raising Rock-Solid Kids in a Pleasure-Driven World” at 7 p.m. April 21 at Waialae Baptist Church, 1047 21st Ave. Call 732-5561, ext. 204. The program includes a performance by the Ekolu Boyz.

* PUBLISHING Local author Rich Budnick presents free one-hour workshops about self-publishing at 1 p.m April 21 at the Kahala Barnes and Noble, 11 a.m. April 28 at Aina Haina Library, and 10 a.m. May 5 at Hawaii Kai Library. Call 395-1161.

* RECYCLING Mayor Mufi Hannemann holds a community meeting to discuss a sustainable recycling plan for Oahu at 7 p.m. April 24 at Kaiser High School. Call Bill Brennan at 527-6928.

* AGING Kahala Nui Senior Living hosts a free Kaiser Permanente “senior summit” talk at 10:30 a.m. April 26 on effective strategies for the golden years. Non-members are welcome. Call 432-2235.

* FAIR Chaminade University and St. Louis School host an Ohana Fair from 1 to 7 p.m. April 27 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 28 with games, rides, food and craft booths - and free parking. A fun run and “sunset movie” are also scheduled April 28. Call 739-7777.

* RECYCLING Kaimuki High School’s Red Cross Club conducts an HI-5 recycling drive from 9 to 11 a.m.April 28 in the school parking lot. Call 733-4900.

* CONCERT The Hawaii Youth Symphony’s String Program presents its Aloha Concert at 2 p.m April 29 in the Kaimuki High School auditorium. Call 941-9706.

* TEST PREP The Verbal & Math Enrichment Program offers a free SAT-Prep workshop for parents and students at 6:30 p.m. May 1 in the Kaiser High School library. Call Raymond Karelitz at 261-6666.

* BLOOD The Hawaii Blood Bank conducts a donor drive from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 1 at Saint Louis School. Call 845-9966.

* ORCHIDS The Hawaii Kai Orchid Society is planning its annual Mother’s Day plant sale for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12 at Hawaii Kai Shopping Center, between Pizza Hut and Blu Water Grill.

* CRATER Tickets are on sale now for the second annual Diamond Head Crater Celebration with Earth, Wind and Fire - and much more - on May 19. Call 1-877-750-4400.


* ART Moku Ola Hawaiian Healing Center at Koko Marina has an exhibit of 15 Hawaiian printmakers on view now through May. Call 394-6658.
