East Oahu Highlights

Below are highlights of what’s happening in the East Oahu community in the next few weeks.

* Kahala Mall welcomes Santa Claus for an extended stay at 11 a.m. Nov. 24, and at 1 p.m. the mall presents a sneak preview of Cirque Hawaii, featuring a few of its dazzling acts. Look for several top performers at the mall over the holidays, such as Aaron Sala, Matt Catingub, the Brothers Cazimero, Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, Holunape, John Cruz and Maunalua. Call 941-0440.

* Hawaii Kai Towne Center holds its annual tree lighting celebration at 5 p.m. Nov. 24, along with keiki train rides, entertainment, carols and visits with Santa. Call 941-0440.


* Unity Church on Diamond Head Circle screens the film Cape of Good Hope at 7 p.m. Nov. 24. Focussed on the 10th anniversary of the end of Apartheid, it was this year’s Best Feature Film at the Spiritual Cinema Festival-at-Sea. Call 735-4436.

* Led by KHON’s Tannya Joaquin, the Hawaii Kai Christmas Parade gets under way at 10 a.m. Nov. 25 at the corner of Hawaii Kai Drive and Lunalilo Home Road. Festivities continue when Santa arrives at noon by speedboat at Koko Marina Center. Bring a new unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots and receive a free ornament from the shopping center.

* Family and Community Education presents a free demonstration of Christmas ideas at 10 a.m. Nov. 28 at Kahala Recreation Center. Call 247-0421.

* Aina Haina Elementary School collects HI-5 cans and bottles from 7:15 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 29, with proceeds going to the Lokahi Tree Giving Program. Call Roslyn at 728-4934.

* Diamond Head Theatre presents the musical Cinderella Dec. 1 to 17. For tickets, call 733-0274.

* Aliiolani Elementary School hosts the “Season’s Best Craft & Gift Fair” from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 2, featuring food, plants and 200 booths. Call 683-6064.

* The Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board meets at 7 p.m. Nov. 28 in the Hahaione Elementary School cafeteria. Call 527-5749.


* Hanauma Bay Education Center presents a free lecture at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in the park theater on reef health, the yellow tang, Hawaii buoy No. 1, and the annually recurring maximum wave. Call 397-5840.

* The Hawaii Blood Bank conducts area donor drives from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 27 at KCC parking lot E; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 1 at Holy Nativity School; 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at Hawaii Kai Towne Center; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 23 in the Kaimuki Municipal Parking Lot; and 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 31 at Hawaii Kai Towne Center. * Kona Brewing Co. Pub in Koko Marina Center has live music at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 and 29 with Kaukahi; Nov. 30 with Weldon Kekauoha and Friends; Nov. 24 with Naluhoe; Nov. 25 with Stephen Brown and Jon Osorio; and Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m. with Ledward Kaapana. Call 394-5662.
