BOE Forum: Vote Or Appoint?

Del.icio.usState Rep. Gene Ward sponsors a community forum and debate Tuesday (Oct. 5) on whether the state Board of Education should be appointed or remain as an elected body.
The program is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hahaione Elementary School cafeteria.
BOE chairman Garrett Toguchi will speak for an elected school board, followed by Hawaii’s Children First, a committee advocating a constitutional amendment to appoint board members. The measure will be on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.
“I used to think an elected board was the only way to get reforms implemented, until I realized that an elected board is part of the problem that nothing gets done in a system that has no accountability and transparency in it,” explained Ward, R-17th District, (Kalama Valley to Hawaii Kai).
“We hope to have a lively debate and win this initiative,” he added, “though the voices of the dissenters are joined by the blank votes in their favor, because blank votes are considered the same as ‘no’ votes in constitutional amendment balloting.”
