Mention Beauty and the Beast or Cats to theater fans and the Broadway hits conjure up images of elaborate costumes, legendary tunes and inspiring performances. Later this year, they also can add “valuable fundraiser” to the list of achievements associated with the famed shows.
Fifty cents from every ticket sold for their Oahu engagements will go to the Broadway in Hawaii Education Fund, which will support art programs at schools and nonprofits - including Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center.
Both shows not only will help local productions, but will continue to promote Honolulu as a sight for future Broadway productions.
“The extraordinary success of our 13-week run of The Lion King really put Honolulu on the map,” said Sidney Quintal, city director of enterprise services, at a recent press conference. “We could-n’t be more pleased to follow up with the Hawaii debut of Beauty and the Beast and the long-awaited return of Cats.”
Beauty and the Beast runs from Sept. 21 to Oct. 3, Cats from Dec. 28 to Jan. 2, both at Blaisdell Concert Hall under direction of national touring companies.
Tickets range from $37 to $67 for Beauty, $35 to $70 for Cats. Buy them at ticketmaster.com, Blaisdell box office, Walmart and Sports Gear at Windward Mall. Some opening-night discounts apply.
