Chaminade Graduating 250 At Arena Ceremony

Del.icio.usWhen 250 students receive their degrees Dec. 13 at Chaminade University’s fall commencement, they will leave with a message from a pioneer in the field of Native Hawaiian psychiatry.
The free public ceremony begins at 7 p.m. Monday at Blaisdell Arena with a keynote address from Dr. Naleen Naupaka Andrade, a professor and chairwoman of the UH medical school’s psychiatry department. She also is founding director of the National Center on Indigenous Hawaiian Behavioral Health and chairs The Queen’s Health Systems’ board of trustees.
Andrade is widely known for her research on thousands of Hawaiian teenagers to determine “the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and the role of culture in mental and behavioral health disorders.”
Also speaking will be undergraduate Jason Blackwell, who is receiving his BS in forensic sciences with a chemistry minor; and graduate student Janell Fa’salia B. Etelagi, who will accept her MS in criminal justice administration.
