Diamond Head Community Theatre productions won 27 Pookela awards from the Hawaii State Theatre Council at its annual banquet at Koolau Golf Club in late July.
A panel of judges independently selected two honorees in each category after viewing entries from the nine participating theaters on Oahu.
Among the island’s best plays for 2010 were DHT’s Joy Luck Club (ensemble play) and Shout (ensemble musical). Among the best directors of a musical was John Rampage for White Christmas. Rampage also won for Leading Male in a Musical (The Drowsy Chaperone), along with Buz Tennent (The Sound of Music).
Leading Female in a Musical included Aubrey Lee Glover and Lydia Pusateri for Guys and Dolls and Sarah Halford for The Sound of Music. The Pookela for Musical Director went to Emmett Yoshioka for White Christmas.
Nearly every category had the East Oahu theater’s imprint, especially for Guys and Dolls, which won eight Pookelas.
