Diamond Head State Monument summit trail hikers can look forward to a safer hike after 60 days of repairs, which start this month.

Contractors are to begin fixing deteriorated sections of the heavily used trail on Nov. 8, but it will remain open to hikers on weekday mornings and weekends.

Partial closure of the park, which attracts more than 600,000 visitors each year, is necessary for the project, explained state parks administrator Dan Quinn, since no bypass is possible during work hours. Heavy foot traffic, erosion and vertical rock faces above and below the trail all have contributed to the deterioration.
