Family Reading Night Feb. 19 At Aliiolani

Del.icio.usAliiolani Elementary School is doing its part to promote the importance of literacy with its annual Family Reading Night from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 19 on the school campus (1240 7th Ave.).
“It’s a fun event that brings out the families,” said parent community networking coordinator Stefanie Sato.“For a large percentage of our students, English is their second language, and even though many of the parents may not understand English, they still come out to listen to the stories and support their children.”
A variety of guest speakers are scheduled to read, including past superintendent of schools Patricia Hamamoto; local author and illustrator and Kalani High grad Scott Goto; local author and teacher Vera Arita; Miss East Oahu and Miss Kahala, as well as UHManoa student athletes.
Families meet in the school cafeteria and then disperse to various classrooms for their reading sessions, after which they will meet in the cafeteria once again for free ice cream sundaes and an autograph session.
“The students also will receive a free book from Scholastics that they are really excited about,” Sato said. “Some students can’t afford to go to Borders each week to get a new book. It’s something they can take home with them to read and share with their family and friends.”
