Helping India Through Photos

Two East Oahu residents are at the heart of an ongoing project that trains and encourages girls and women in India to be creative and self-reliant.
UH religion professor Ramdas Lamb and photographer Dana Forsberg will present a free public lecture on their work, “India Through Girls’ Eyes,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Yukiyoshi Room of Krauss Hall 012.
Through the Sahayog Foundation, an NGO co-founded by Hawaii Kai’s Lamb, they are teaching photography to rural high school girls in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh with the goal of eliminating poverty and forging community change. Lamb lived in India from 1969 to the mid-1970s, and has worked with the villagers since then.
Technical and communication skills are stressed, often opening the possibility of a career in photography for the young women.
Forsberg, a resident of the Diamond Head area, has exhibited her photos in the Denver airport, The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center, a cultural center in Korea and other venues.
